Kharkiv National University is one of the major universities in Ukraine, and earlier was one of the major universities in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. It was founded in 1804 through the efforts of VasylKarazin (after whom the university is now named). With its over 200-year history the Kharkiv National University is part of the intellectual, cultural and spiritual history of Ukraine. The University is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. Today the University justly rates among the best Ukrainian classical universities and is known in many countries. Kharkiv National University is the only university in Ukraine that has trained and employed three Nobel Prize laureates: the biologist I.Mechnikov the economist S.Kuznets, and the physicist L.Landau.


The medical faculty was opened among first four faculties of university and was called as department of medical sciences, subsequently renamed into Faculty of Medicine which has existed 115 years. The faculty of Medicine includes 22 Doctors of Sciences, full professors, 68 candidates of sciences, associate professors and instructors including 19 Indian Professors. Training is provided at the facilities of the University Faculty and Kharkiv research and medical institutions.

Today the University has 21 Faculty and 125 Departments which provide training for specialists in 61 majors including Medical faculty with the aid of 1500 teaching staff. The University also comprises 3 Research Institutes (of Astronomy, Biology and Chemistry), Central Scientific Library with over 3.5 million books in its stocks, Botanical Garden, University History Museum, Museum of Natural History, Museum of Archeology and Ethnography, University Schools, International Students training center.

There are over 1200 students studying on six courses, including 800 from other countries including India. The medical course (MBBS, BDS, MD, MDS, MS) of this institution is prestigious and recognized in many countries of the world including the UNESCO, GMC, WHO and MCI (Medical Council of India).

The Medical faculty focuses its research on the modern problems of theoretical and clinical medicine. Since 2002, the faculty has published the Journal Kharkiv University Bulletin: Medicine in English. The Medical faculty is integrated with 24 Hospitals scattered through out the Kharkiv city.

V.N.KarazinKharkiv National University has a very good hostel system with fully furnished centrally airconditioned rooms, furnished Kitchen, Separate arrangement for Girls, 24 hours running hot and cold water, WIFI internet facility and round the clock security. All rooms are equipped with bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, Almira and sutiable lighting for both study and relaxation.

The hostels are at close proximity to the University and accessible both by walk and public transport like Metro. South and North Indian MESS are operated in the hostel campus for the benefit of Indian Students.
